Waihaha hut - field at 1026km (23km)

Had the best sleep last night- fire was absolutely baking at first so had to go outside for some air but after that I slept pretty much through to the morning... about an hour after saying goodnight though, Luke starting sleep talking about something being 'too small to be a midget' and talking about goblins- was quite hilarious actually. Wonder what he was dreaming about!?

We lay in for a little bit since it was so cosy in the hut and started walking around 8am. We'd prepared ourselves for a tough day since the track notes say it takes 7 hours for the 11km to the next hut but we'd made it all the way by midday. You start by taking a nice flat route beside the river where there are lots of little stream crossings and multiple clearings that would have made for amazing camp spots. After the first few km though it turns into steep climbs up and down until the hut.

Pleased to have got there just on lunch time, we sat on the decking in the sunshine and overlooked views of the forest as we ate our Nutella wraps. It constantly amazes me how much of this country is covered in forest. You can look in every direction and see nothing for miles and miles besides for trees. It's quite scary really - quite glad we invested in a good GPS!

After lunch we continued up and down muddy, slippery, trip hazardous slopes all the way to the road that led us nicely to our camp site; the only flat non-cow-trodden patch of grass right beside a little stream. We all dipped our feet in the freezing water to cool off and prepared for the next few days walking before cooking and eating all of our left over treats - it is a resupply day tomorrow after all!
